I have skipped two months of blogging to do this post but I will go back and post everything we have done this summer so far.
In 1997 I played on a women's softball team. I hit the ball and was running to first base when I got hit in the head with the softball. I immediately fell to the ground unconcious! When I woke up I felt so sick and Bobby rushed my to the hospital. I obviously had head trama but my arm that I fell on hurt really bad too. In fact, it hurt worse than my head. After sitting in the emergency room waiting room for 1 hour, I asked the receptionist if they would at least wash the dirt off my arm because it hurt so bad. When they finally checked me out I didn't have anything wrong with me.
This whole thing happened in June and in October I noticed that I couldn't hear very good in one of my ears. I went to the ENT Doctor and he said that a piece of my ear that resonates and makes it so I can hear, had broken off and I neeeded surgery. He said this was all caused by the hit to my head months before. I had the surgery and it went very very bad. I had it done at a surgery center early in the morning and I stayed there the whole day. Everytime I woke up I had vertigo so bad that I was sick, I couldn't focus on anything so they wouldn't let me leave. When the center was ready to close, they transferred my to St. Mark's Hospital and I stayed there until the vertigo left enough for me to walk by myself.
This is a long story but it does have a point. A few years later, after the accident I decided to be brave and try playing again. Let me mention also that I had been hit with a softball before. I had played softball every year since I was 11 or 12 years old. I have been hit in the arm, butt, leg and even my ear but nothing as severe as this. Needless to say I was terrified (and still am) of the ball. This new team was a co-ed team which made me even more scared. I played one game with sweaty palms and lots of anxiety and decided I just couldn't do it. Bobby played on the team for the rest of the season and I sat in the stands and watched.
So, after more than 10 years, I have not played softball at all. I haven't ever had the desire to play and the oppurtunity never came up. Bobby started playing on Nucor's co-ed team and I missed half of the season. Either I couldn't go on the night he played or he didn't play because he was working. A couple of weeks ago I went to watch him play but that's not what happened. They needed me to play or they would have forfieted. I only had on flip-flops so I had to borrow someone's shoes (gross!) I played in the feild and so everything went ok.
This week I decided to take my mit and shoes in case they needed me to play. They ended up forfieting because they didn't have enough even with me there. The other team still wanted to play so we just batted around. You got to hit and if you got out you just went to the feild and moved to each postition until you got to hit again. I was way nervous because I didn't want to play in the feild at all! The first in-feild position was 3rd base. The first hit (by a man) came right to me and hit me in the shin. I couldn't believe it! It hurt so bad I had to come out and sit on the bench. After a few minutes I went back in and finished the game. I played all the positions and even made an out on first base. I think that I will be ok as far as playing again. I haven't conquered the fear but maybe I am one step closer. Here is a picture of my poor leg. It actually hurts more now then when I first got hit and it looks much worse. Maybe now I will have a scar on my arm and leg, hopefully not though!
